Hull Boys Sunday Football League
Under 14's Preliminary Round K.O. Cup
14th September 2003
Sutton Devils 1 v 4 Bridlington Rangers
Rangers Goal Scorers : S Mellonby (2) J Butterfield T Keeping.
This was the first
game of the season for Rangers playing for the first time in the Hull League.
Drawn against a team two divisions higher Rangers expected a difficult match
however it was rangers who started the more lively and were unlucky not
to score in the opening minute of the game. Following constant pressure
Rangers went ahead after 7 minutes when Mellonby rounded the keeper to slot
the ball home from 8 yards. Rangers continued to dominate and following
some excellent play by Watson and Wardle, Butterfield found himself unmarked
and fired home on 15 minutes. The Rangers defence of Heathcote, Hoyle, Wright
and Yhklef remained solid allowing Sutton only a couple of goal attempts
in the first half. Rangers scored two goals late in the half the best from
Keeping who rifled in a shot from the edge of the area and the other a simple
head in from close range. The second half saw Sutton come out more determined
but it was again Rangers that had the better chances but could not extend
the lead. Rangers were caught on the break and Sutton pulled a goal back
after 46 minutes and this seemed to pick them up and they had their best
spell of the game but had only one goal scoring chance, which was well saved
by Taylor. Rennoldson and Ingram kept it tight at the back for Rangers late
in the game and Chapman was tireless in the Rangers midfield and was unlucky
not to get
on the score sheet.
Overall this was an excellent performance on what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year.
Rangers would like to thank JB Hairstylists for sponsoring their new kit for this season.
