Quarter Final K.O. Cup
30th November 2003
Bridlington Rangers 5 v 3 Leconfield Swinemoor
Rangers Goalscorers:-
S Wardle (2), J Butterfield,J Christlow, S Mellonby.
Leconfield Swinemoor two divisions higher than Rangers were expected to
be tough opposition in this Cup Quarter Final fixture. It was Rangers playing
into the sun that made the early running and were rewarded with an early
goal when Christlow outpaced the Leconfield defence and neatly slotted the
ball past the keeper. Several excellent chances were squandered due to some
great saves by the Leconfield keeper and the Rangers defence of Ykhlef,
Chapman, Wright and Heathcote coped well with the Leconfield strikers. On
the half hour against the run of play Leconfield beat the off-side trap
to level the score. The second half saw Rangers attack from the off and
went into the lead again when some excellent play was coolly converted.
Rangers continued to pressure looking to extend the lead and following a
six pass build up Keepings through ball split the Leconfield defence and
Mellonby slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. Almost from the restart
Rangers won the ball and Rennoldson whipped in a cross, which was controlled
on the chest of Butterfield and his neat turn and volley, was rifled in
to the roof of the net from 18 yards. Five minutes later Ingram played a
long ball across the pitch, which Wardle gathered and beat two defenders
before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the goal to
score his second of the game. Rangers continued to pressure and left it
open at the back but their slack marking was saved by Taylor who made a
couple of great saves one on one with a Leconfield striker. Rangers thought
they had scored from a corner when Watson's powerful header appeared to
have crossed the line but Leconfield on the counter attack broke and scored.
Late in the game Leconfield pulled a goal back when a great volley was kept
out by a great one handed save but the resulting clearance rebounded off
a Rangers player for an own goal.
This was an excellent all round team performance.
