Under 14's First Round K.O. Cup
5th October 2003
Bridlington Rangers 5 v 3 Walkington Wanderers
Rangers Goal scorers:- J Butterfield (2) S Wardle (2) A Heathcote
Rangers started slowly in this cup tie and found themselves a goal down after six minutes following a slip by a Rangers defender. Rangers got back into the game and following a series of corners the ball fell to Heathcote on the edge of the area and he struck the ball low into the corner of the net to level the score. Walkington against the run of play scored an opportunist goal and went further ahead following a well taken penalty. Rangers attacked immediately and pulled a goal back within 30 seconds when the Walkington keeper was lobbed from 15 yards and it remained 3-2 at half time. The second half saw Rangers playing with more passion and following some quick passing play from Ykhlef and Keeping the Rangers forward slammed the ball home from 12 yards to level the score. The Rangers defence of Rennoldson, Hoyle, Wright and Ingram contained the Walkington forwards for most of the second half but Taylor in the Rangers goal had to make a superb block save when one on one with the Walkington centre forward. A few minutes later a quick throw out by the Rangers keeper found Chapman whose inch perfect pass found Mellonby out wide and he whipped in a cross which was met by Butterfield and his shot was rifled high into the roof of the net. With five minutes to go Rangers secured the victory when Wardle was put free and he outpaced the full back and slotted the ball past the advancing keeper. Rangers made hard work of this game but determination paid off in the end to secure a place in the K.O. cup second round. Sponsor: JB's Hairstylists.
