Bridlington Rangers 10 v 0 Walkington Wanderers
Rangers Goal Scorers: J Butterfield (3) S Wardle (3) J Chapman (2) J Christlow
A Rennoldson
This was the second meeting of these two teams in the last three weeks and
Rangers were expecting a tight game. Rangers attacked from the start and
were rewarded with a goal in the opening 5 minutes following some excellent
play by Mellonby and Keeping down the right hand side. The lead was increased
ten minutes later when the ball was powerfully headed in from a corner.
Rangers capitalised as the Walkington players heads dropped and they scored
two goals in two minutes to lead by four goals after 20 minutes. The Rangers
defence of Heathcote, Hoyle, Wright and Ykhlef were rarely breached by the
Walkington strikers who did not have a shot on goal in the first half. The
second half saw Rangers playing quick passing football and created a number
of chances in the opening minutes. Ingram played a long ball forward for
a Rangers striker to run onto and slot the ball neatly past the diving keeper.
Minutes later Rangers were awarded a penalty but this was hit wide of the
goal. A strong run from Christlow playing for the first time this season
following an injury saw him outwit the keeper and place the ball neatly
into the corner of the net. Wardle then received the ball on the edge of
the area and turned the full back and cleverly lobbed the advancing keeper
to complete his hat trick. Again Taylor in the Rangers goal was merely a
spectator with only a handful of touches throughout the game. Rangers continued
to pressurise the Walkington goal and Rennoldson had a simple tap in before
the tireless Chapman made a penetrating run from midfield through the Walkington
defence and rifled the ball low into the corner of the net for his second
goal of the game. Rangers rounded off the scoring in the last couple of
minutes when Butterfield struck the ball from 20 yards to complete his hat
trick. This was again a fine all round team performance maintaining their
100% record in the league. Thanks to Mark Hoyle for refereeing.
