CHERRY BURTON v BRIDLINGTON RANGERS

Graham Waters plumbing services sponsored Bridlington Rangers traveled to Cherry Burton today for the first meeting of these two teams. 2nd Division leaders Cherry Burton started the stronger and for the first 10minutes Rangers where pressed and needed to soak up a series of strong attacks. Strong defensive work from Tom Parr and Jamie Osborne with some wonderfully timed challenges stopped the attacks at the crucial time. If the Cherry Burton did break through an ever alert Stuart King in the Rangers net bravely put him self about to keep the scores level.

Rangers re -shuffled the pack on 12mins and moved Jones back and Andy Clay up into the midfield, this gave Rangers more pace at the back and height in the midfield. It seemed to work , Rangers then began to play a little more flowing football, a good ball by Scott Lapworth to Gordon , who then released Waters but in the very sticky conditions he failed to drive the ball home. Rangers pressed further and two good corners saw the ball scrambled away denying Midgley and Adam Wright.

As the the pitch worsened both teams found it difficult to get a foot hold, Micheal Trains good pace and acurate tackles stopped two very good Cherry Burton chances and Peter Jones along with Parr where sturdy in the center of the Rangers back four. Danny Gordon went close with a long distance effort and Waters along with Lapworth both saw efforts fly over the bar. This was a true cup tie, both teams battling for every ball and playing at times some very passionate football. Jack Tye replaced Lapworth as the half drew to a close giving Rangers a little more aerial power down the right but it was Cherry Burton, though who on 44minutes took the lead after a corner wasn't cleared and they netted there first from close range.

The second half saw Rangers come out stronger and it was Waters again who blasted a goal bound effort at the Cherry Burton net only to see the keeper parry the ball wide. From the corners that followed Rangers shot at goal but the equalizing goal wouldn't come. Cherry Burton still in the game pressed Rangers hard on the break but Stuart King stood firm and made some wonderful saves to keep the tie alive. On 59mins Rangers again went close when Sub Alan Leyland came on blasted down the right crossed the ball in only to see the Rangers shot cleared. Slightly against the run of play Cherry Burton on 84minutes won a close offside decision and slipped the ball into the Rangers net. Rangers heads didn't go down, in fact they took the game by the scruff of the neck and attacked Cherry Burton with all they could muster and within 3minutes Andy Clay had netted Rangers first, Rangers then had a shot cleared off the line and the last 6mins of the game where Rangers but a strong Cherry Burton team hung on and claimed the ticket into the next round.

FINAL SCORE:- CHERRY BURTON 2 v 1 BRIDLINGTON RANGERS.

COACHES COMMENTS:- This was always going to be a hard game, playing against a team of players mostly a year older than the young Rangers team. For most of the tie Rangers where in the game, matching Cherry Burton. This was a tough tie and every player played their part in making it a memorable Cup tie. Well played everyone, lets look forward now to next week when we play Artic Rangers in the Dr Lilley ERCFA Cup.

MOM:- Tom Parr for good leadership at the back and who's pace and tackling today where second to none.
