COTTINGHAM RANGERS V BRIDLINGTON RANGERS

Graham Waters Plumbing Services and Osborne Building Services sponsored Brid Rangers traveled to Cottingham knowing only a win will do today to tie the Championship and force a playoff.

This game turned out to be an enthralling tie played with some true grit and determination from both teams, Cottingham only needed a point to secure the Crown but a determined Bridlington Rangers who secured their third successive promotion last week still had the hunger for one last push. It was Ben Towers and Rob Waters who led from the front battling for all the balls, Ian Midgley and Jamie Osborne worked the left and Jack Tye with Michael Train fought for everything down the right. It was Rangers who pressed for the opener and both Waters and Towers went close but the opening goal didn’t want to come. Tom Parr carrying a knock from last week won almost every header at the back for Rangers and Danny Gordon along with Adam Wright began to show some steel in the midfield. A Free kick 25 yards out was floated into the far post and in swooped Rangers to net the opening goal on 23minutes. Cottingham came straight back at Rangers but this week an alert Stuart King in the Brid net was quick off his line and helped stop any danger. Cottingham did press forward and put Brid under pressure but the half went Brid’s way.

HT Cottingham Rangers 0 v 1 Bridlington Rangers

The second half saw Wright winning more and more of the ball in the midfield and a great break by Waters who sped away from the chasing defenders, neatly knocked home Rangers second early in the second half. Tom Parr and Ian Midgley led the team and every last player gave it 110% today knowing that a win would send both teams into a playoff for the title. A spirited comeback was now on the cards as Cottingham broke and pulled a goal back 12mins from time. Brid broke the pressure and sub Allan Leyland had a point blank header clipped over the bar on 82mins which would have secured the game for Brid. Cottingham began to throw everything forward including the goal keeper but a resolute Brid Rangers began the game working as a team and attacking Cottingham ended it on the back foot but defended as a unit stopping every Cottingham attack.

The final whilst blew and a deflated Cottingham knew the title had slipped and a Triumphant Bridlington team new they had done enough to win the game and now look forward to the playoff, the time of which is still to be arranged.

FINAL SCORE:- COTTINGHAM RANGERS 1 v 2 BRIDLINGTON RANGERS

MOM:- Whole team for a tremendous effort over the whole season well played every last man.

Managers Comments:-Bridlington Rangers in the middle of February were 13points behind Cottingham this is quite an amazing comeback to draw level on points in the last game of the season, but we still have one more game to win to finish the season off in style. We are now at half time, we can do this if we all believe but Cottingham next time will be fighting themselves even harder than today so we will have to up our game to clinch the title.
