WYKE DIVISION
Cottingham Rangers v
Bridlington Rangers ( League champions )
2-5-2004
Graham Waters Plumbing Services and Scot's Butchers sponsored Brid Rangers traveled to Cottingham to play our home fixture as no pitches where available in Bridlington. This match should have been the climax to the season but Rangers snatched the League title last week from Cottingham having secured a convincing win over Hessle. Both team started playing some good football but it was Rangers who took the lead through a well driven low shot form Waters. Cottingham threatened the Rangers goal but great defending and midfield play kept most attacks to shot from distance or set pieces which Rangers dealt with. Brid Rangers always looked threatening and Rob Waters went close again but his shot just missed the net. Rangers goal of the season came next following a quick throw out from Stuart King in the Rangers net to Jamie Osborne who did a quick one- two with Andy Clay, he flicked the ball up to Garth Young who in turn laid the ball wide for Micheal Harvey, he skipped a lunging challenge and drove the ball across the box for Jack Tye to drill into the back of the net. This was what today's performance was all about a good strong team effort and this was a brilliant team goal. HT 2-0 to Brid Rangers. In the second half Cottingham seemed to change tactics and began to try and intimidate and wind up the Rangers players but for the majority of the time this didn't work and Waters netted his second and Rangers third 8mins into the second half. Micheal Train joined Peter Jones, Tom Parr and Jamie Osborne in the Rangers defence / midfield, because at times there where that many Rangers players attacking as a team it was a wonder Rangers didn't score more. Cottingham pulled a goal back 10mins before time, before their striker was then sent off for violent conduct. Brid Rangers went on the attack again and Waters made it four on the day for Brid Rangers. This was a day when Bridlington Rangers showed some steel and performed as true League Champions do, winning the game and playing some exciting football. Ian Midgley though injured played in the Rangers net for the last 5mins of the match which I believe makes him the only player to have played in every position in the squad this season.
FINAL SCORE: COTTINGHAM RANGERS
1 v 4 BRID RANGERS
Rangers Man of the Match: Micheal
Parr following a terrific first half display as voted by the rest of the
team, well played.
COACHES COMMENTS: A truly great team performance we showed today why Bridlington
Rangers U16's are the League Champions finishing the League 7 points clear
of Cottingham.
